~Menzoberranzan
RPG by SSI
Reviewed by Lu Richardson.
This is the sequel to Ravenloft. I never did manage to get into
Ravenloft and, do you know, I couldn't get into this one, either.
Why is that?
Well, one cannot fault the graphics, nor the quality of the game.
The view is first person, the scenario 3-D and the scrolling is
fairly smooth - it does run rather slowly in my machine, but then
I've only got a 386. As well, I only have 4 Mb of memory, which
means I cannot use the sound facilities because the game freezes on
me.
You have all the options you normally have in SSI games, that is to
say, a goodly number of them and very sensible, too. The interface,
although it irritates me no end (you have to click on the face of
the character every time you wish to pick up or use an object), is
not so very difficult but, it is true, somewhat troublesome.
So, if the basics of good gameplay are there and the story is
reasonably interesting as it develops when you adventure on, why is
it I cannot get excited about it? Could it be because the action is
slow? I don't know, all I can tell you that after an hour's play I
was bored and could not get myself worked up about what happens next.
Mind you, this are only my personal feelings. Other people, I am
sure, will relish this game as much as they did Ravenloft. Me, I
just wish that SSI had not abandoned their successful Eye of the
Beholder format. Now, THOSE were exciting games, and people up and
down the country were really into them. Ravenloft and
Menzoberranzan are too clumsy to play and too slow in action to hold
interest, so can we please have some more of EOB?
